GSA Lets True Colors Shine

Housatonic’s own Gay Straight Alliance is sponsoring another trip to True Colors, a two day seminar at Central Connecticut State University on March 18 and 19.

The theme this year is Over the Rainbow and Out of the Box.  In its twelfth year, True Colors is the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex youth conference in the United States, with over 1500 people attending in 2004.

Conference passes normally run $95 for a college age student, but the GSA is paying for any HCC student who wishes to attend.  Anyone interested in going should contact GSA president Ashley McGuffie before March 1st to sign up.

True Colors is not just an event for the LGBTQI community.  There are workshops for students, social workers, teachers, parents, legislators, or anyone with an interest in activism.  Also, the conference is fun.  As one attendee at last’s year event said, "[It’s] a lifetime of memories in two short days."

There will be over 200 workshops that attendees can choose from. It is an excellent place to make contacts from other schools; students from sixteen different colleges in Connecticut attend.  There will be a Job/Intern fair, plus several Connecticut organizations set up information booths.  In addition, participants in some workshops will receive a certificate from the Activist Institute.

Even though the GSA is not providing transportation, it’s important to sign up early so as to plan carpools.  The GSA meets in A226 on Mondays at 3:45 every other week.  Ashley McGuffie can be reached at AshMcGuffie@yahoo.com.  More information about True Colors can be found at www.OurTrueColors.org.
